Jex Thoth: Blood moon rise

05/07/13  ||  sincan

Jex Thoth, the hype, the myth and the singer which makes all of the psychedelic doom Woodstock nerds to shit in their pants of joy while spilling weed in their mother’s couches.

Well it must be said that I’ve seen the band name occasionally without digging deeper into the dwell of this doom and psychedelic metal’n‘roll of “another chick fronted metal band with weird lyrics about supernatural things”. And to be honest, it was some well spent time.

The album opener “To bury” is somewhat a mixture between an intro and an “ordinary” track with its lounging music in the background, together with Jex’s relatively dramatic vocals, in the front. To be honest this must be one of my favorite tracks on the album. Kind of a bummer that it is relatively short with its two minutes and 54 seconds.

While listening to this album it strikes me that Jex Thoth music for some people might appear to pendulate between different genres and not really find its place among the musical diversity (hopefully you follow what I’m trying to say here). Yes, it can easily be described as psychedelic doom/rock, but all those stoner doom kids running around these days might think that this lacks the heaviness and groove while all those old Black Sabbath blokes might think that this is too organic and soft for some reason which most likely is derived out of the uncertainty regarding their own sexuality. I appreciate the laid back music which sometimes reminds me of old school doom or sometimes newer doom is more present and finally to twist it up with a Jefferson Airplane vibe. Fuck I just ran out of the word doom now…

Seriously guys’n‘girls I hereby offer you the super hit of the entire album Keep your weeds. If you don’t feel like taking a rather spiritual journey of rainbows, forests, unicorns and the smell from different types of essences originating from things that burn which can both be legal and illegal, while hearing the chorus this is most likely not your cup of mother earth (fuck you, I’m not overdoing it). Well the other tracks on this album is not in the same super hit caliber but still offers a pretty cozy journey for those who are not afraid of listening to music which doesn’t make blood burst out of the speakers.

The album closes with the beautiful track Psyar, also being the longest by reaching over eight minutes. Finally it must be stressed that Jex’s voice is so well fitting for this kind of music, both including originality and at the same time reflecting old good times, the musicianship is not bad either.

This is a must have for the upcoming barbecues in the woods during the summer.
